This month, a handful of scholars were flown to San Francisco to participate in a world-renowned leadership and public speaking program from Stand and Deliver. Below, the young women give us insight into their feelings during the experience:

“The Stand and Deliver seminar was tremendously enlightening and liberating. The team illustrated how a person’s voices can deliver affirmative perspective to a society. Thus, by using clear, and informative speeches or statements, we have a chance to construct a society that we have been craving for; raising women and other global challenges for a better future. Additionally, seeing a room full of women working together with the objective of strengthening their speaking abilities was incredible. The room was filled with wonderful collective spirits. Everyone was willing to help and support each other in any way; if I had to describe what I felt in that room in two words, it would be “Women Power”.”

“My very first trip to San Francisco, California came with endless memories and experiences to hold on and always remember about my first summer in the United States. The beauty of the city: the hills, the constant temperatures, the green and most definitely the incredible people constantly reminded me about Rwanda which is made up and surrounded by all the mentioned. For the first time, I had a formal and arranged training about public speaking and only within 2 days, I acquired the skills that will undoubtedly set a great pace for me to become a capable leader.

The trip also came with a once in a lifetime opportunity of meeting and networking with many successful and inspiring women including mentors and friends of Open A Door. The icing on the cake for everything was being around other OAD scholars some of whom I had met for the first time in the US. Through each one of them, there was an unparalleled spirit of happiness and gratitude, which were infectious.

“Last weekend was amazing, being part of the Stand and Deliver seminar made me feel confident about public speaking. I learned skills that I could apply when planning on giving a presentation to make it interesting, organized and helpful to the audience. It was also fun getting to visit San Francisco for the first time, meeting all the amazing mentors, Open A Door members and also my friends I had not seen in a while.”
