SHE-CAN’s scholar support starts with our extensive staff and expands to a dedicated mentor team who is committed to helping their scholar succeed. Together, we help our scholars:
- Get Ready for Life in the U.S.: Extensive vetting, entrance exam prep, support of leadership projects, immigration processing support, pre-college writing & reading prep, acculturation workshops, and more
- Settle in at College: Flights, a place to stay before going to campus, move-in support, dorm supplies, warm clothing, a computer & phone, and more
- Thrive on Campus: Guidance from five mentors, a home for the holidays, health insurance, books, internship support, and more
- Develop as a Leader: Annual leadership training, extensive public speaking experience, personal development courses, enhanced English language courses, and more
As a SHE-CAN Scholarship Coalition member, colleges benefit from having outstanding students on their campus.
Our extensive, in-person recruiting process assures our scholars shine on campus. Over two-thirds of our scholars are on the Dean’s List, 99% graduate on time, and the average GPA for last semester was 3.4. In addition, our scholars get involved on campus as resident advisors, orientation leaders, club presidents, study abroad scholars, and more. Once they graduate, they become leaders at home and distinguished alumni.

We excel at placing sought-after students on our partners’ campuses because of our hands-on, step by step process.
In-Person Recruitment
- We recruit candidates through an online application that is sent to our extensive in-country networks, pushed with paid advertising, and promoted by our current scholar-base.
- SHE-CAN staff and recruitment volunteers travel to meet top candidates in person. During the pandemic, this was done online.
- Selected candidates participate in rapid fire interviews, small group conversations, an in-home visit, and a community presentation.
Early Preparation
- Scholars take IELTS & SAT prep classes and lead a project that addresses an issue in their community.
- Local tutors work with scholars to prepare them for U.S. college coursework.
- Each scholar is matched with a 5 person mentor team to assist her with her college applications & her community service project.
- Scholars participate in acculturation workshops to minimize their culture shock upon arrival.
On-Going Support
- Mentors provide their scholar with emotional support, a home away from home, and guidance on their academics, finances, career plans, and more.
- SHE-CAN connects scholars with top internship opportunities at companies like Boeing, Cisco, and Worldbridge.
- Scholars participate in exclusive leadership trainings, career development, and personal development trainings.
