SHE-CAN Scholar: Menghorng Kao

Menghorng, a determined young woman from rural Kampong Cham province, grew up in a family of four with parents who believed in the power of education. Her father is a teacher, and her mother works as a business vendor. Despite a culture that often claimed “tech is only for boys,” she excelled in school—especially in math—and bravely pursued her interest in technology. Facing limited resources and support, she joined tech competitions and training programs, eventually creating mobile apps to address community challenges.

Her passion led her to found a startup called “STEMUNITY”, providing online support for STEM education, and to represent Cambodian girls on global stages, including the United Nations. Motivated by the obstacles she faced, she launched the “WE DARE DO” project to inspire students—especially girls—to explore STEM fields. Through bootcamps, events, and a social media campaign documenting her four-year tech journey, she has impacted over 300 students and inspired more than 30,000 people nationwide.
