SHE-CAN Scholar: Aidy Ung

Aidy Ung, from Cambodia, graduated from Lafayette College with a degree in Civil Engineering. She is now pursuing a Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering at Virginia Tech University.

At Lafayette, Aidy was the treasurer of the Society of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (SEES). She was also a member of the Leadership Education Committeethe Society of Women Engineers, and the Landis Center for Student Engagement. Through the Center for Student Engagement, Aidy led students as a STEM summer learning instructor in the summer of 2018. She spent the summer and fall of 2019 as an EXCEL Scholar, working with a geotechnical engineering professor on research about the direct shear test on Towhee clay. Aidy and her team also won the 2019 Steel Bridge Competition in her Structural Analysis and Steel Design class at Lafayette. Later in her college career, Aidy studied abroad at the University College London and interned at Langan Engineering in San Francisco, CA.

Before joining SHE-CAN, Aidy Ung was majoring in architectural engineering at Zaman University in Cambodia. She graduated from Preah Sisowath High School in 2015 with exceptionally high marks on the National Exam. During her time in high school, she was selected to be a participant in the JENESYS 2.0 Exchange Program, where she studied internationally in Japan. This program was an eye-opening experience for her, as she acquired a greater understanding about developed countries like Japan.

Aidy also received first place in a contest with the ASEAN Youth Organization, a group dedicated to international youth empowerment, and traveled to Singapore and Malaysia for a city study tour. She came to appreciate how tourism and tourist attractions in these countries generated important income and served to benefit a country’s national budget. On this trip, Aidy was inspired to study engineering in order to improve the infrastructure and tourism within her own country.  She is passionate about helping underprivileged families live in better conditions and working to improve their standards of living.
