Sopheak Thy will graduate from Bucknell University in December. She grew up in a rural province about two hours from Phnom Penh. When she was ten, Sopheak was awarded an 8-year scholarship to the Liger Leadership Academy. Liger is an exceptional project-based learning academy that provides a residential scholarship program for economically disadvantaged students. At 15, Sopheak took on the role as a lead organizer for the first ever Gender Summit 2018, consisting of more than 100 students from schools and organizations all across Cambodia. The goal of the summit was to create humanitarian awareness for the necessity of gender equity. This eye-opening experience enabled Sopheak to gain a deeper understanding of other young Cambodians’ points of view regarding these vital yet sensitive issues. While being a gender activist is Sopheak’s passion, she is also very determined to pursue a degree in clinical psychology. She hopes to provide necessary medical attention to the Cambodian people and fight against negative stereotypes surrounding mental health issues. She has met many people who have experienced depression in their lives yet were turned away from opportunities when trying to talk about it. As a change agent of Cambodia, Sopheak wants to provide the resources and attention to people who need them most.​
