SHE-CAN Scholar: Shennel Henries

Shennel EP Henries is an advocate and transformational leader who believes in the power of making a difference. She graduated from the University of San Francisco, majoring in International Studies with a minor in Legal Studies, and is currently pursuing her graduate studies at the University of San Francisco. Before her university journey, she was a graduate of the Gbowee Peace Foundation program in Liberia during high school.

In 2021, Shennel was recognized with the Emerging Leadership Award by the University of San Francisco’s Division of Student Life for her leadership, dedication, hard work, and active involvement on campus. Throughout her time at USF, she held various leadership roles, including Secretary of the International Student Association, ASUSF Senate member of the Internal Affairs committee, fellow of the Magis Emerging Leadership Program, International Student Orientation Guide, and member of the Student Advisory Committee under the Office of International Student Initiatives. She continues her commitment to leadership development by serving as a mentor for the Magis Emerging Leadership Program, guiding a group of fellows through leadership retreats, weekly development sessions, and an extensive year-long training program.

Shennel’s passion for elevating the voices of girls around the world led her to serve on the 2022 Girl Up Alumni Steering Committee. Her journey with Girl Up began in high school, where she transitioned from a club member to a leader. In 2018, she keynoted a session titled “The Girl Up Impact: Creating Safe Spaces for Girls in Liberia” at the Girl Up Global Summit in Washington, D.C., engaging with over 400 activists. From 2019 to 2020, she was honored with the role of Girl Up Regional Leader of Liberia, where she led initiatives to empower young girls in her community.

Her dedication to leadership and advocacy resonates through her work with various organizations and institutions. To give a glimpse of her personality, Shennel shares:

“Coming from a very iconic and rich shoe-shaped country, here’s a smiley comedy-drama characteristic of a human, with a dash of organized thriller, and a company of a cozy night in. Promise not to keep you disappointed if you are in need of entertainment, but will give you a whole house when you need space.”
