SHE-CAN Scholar: Lucky “Courage” Ughweri

Courage Ughweri is a second-year student at the University of Portland majoring in Civil Engineering. She is from a low-income family in Liberia and is the youngest of her parents’ seven girls. Courage is passionate about civil engineering, hoping to improve people’s lives and safety. In addition to a desire to make a positive impact in the society, she wants to be a role model for other young women venturing into STEM.

At UP, Courage is a Student Associate working with the Shiley community in media and communication. In Summer 2023, she was an intern at Vega Civil Engineering, LLC, where she provided support on Civil 3D and engineering projects. Before joining UP, Courage attended the Stella Maris Polytechnic University (SMPU) studying Civil Engineering. While in SMPU, she tutored aspiring women engineers and held leadership roles such as class president and secretary in almost every class she attended.

In high school, Courage held various leadership roles: Class President, Advisor to the School’s President, and the Captain of the Girls Basketball Team. With her exceptional leadership, Courage became a founding member and Chief Operations Officer of Youth Action for Progressive Initiative (YAPI), where she and her team worked in low-income areas to support people with substance addictions. She also volunteered with Courageous Ladies Initiatives (COLI), an organization that donates sanitary materials and clothings to orphanage homes and provides scholarships and school supplies for the least privileged. Courage also constructed a concrete footpath bridge and reconditioned a well – which is a source of drinking water for many – in her community because the rate at which diseases were spreading among the inhabitants of the community was alarming.
