SHE-CAN Scholar: Jel Luma

Jel D. Luma is attending Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She spent the summer of 2022 working as a Sales and Marketing Intern at Kawadah Farms in Liberia and has also volunteered as a Global Scholar Orientation Leader on campus at Babson.

Jel is from the city of Brewerville, where she lived with her mother, a homemaker, and her father, who is an electrician.

She was the valedictorian of her high school class and was also awarded the prestigious Ellen Johnson Academic Excellence award in 2016. While in high school, Jel served as secretary and later, president, of the Elegant Girls Guide Club (EGG). The EGG aims to raise awareness about issues girls face in their day to day lives such as peer pressure, sexual harassment, and sexual exploitation.

Jel is also a founding member of the Partners for Education – Liberia, a non-profit youth organization inspiring education, leadership, and entrepreneurship. She has helped inspire over 3,500 students and teachers. In August of 2018, Jel attended a week-long HIV/AIDS workshop and subsequently volunteered to work as a peer educator; her work influenced 500+ people to take an HIV test and know their status.

Jel’s area of interest is entrepreneurship surrounding sustainable food systems. Since she has experienced hunger first-hand, she has a passion for changing Liberia’s food system while keeping the environment green and safe.
