PLEN (Public Leadership Education Network) is a national organization dedicated to engaging young women and preparing them to take on leadership positions in the public policy field. Throughout the year, they host a variety of different seminars on topics ranging from science and health policy to women in the non-profit world. I attended PLEN’s Women and Policy in the Global Community seminar that took place from May 18-22, 2015 in Washington, D.C. This was an amazing opportunity and I am honored to have been selected as one of the thirty young women who were invited to attend the conference.

During the five day event, we went to a number of informational panels that discussed diverse topics like foreign policy, work-life balance for professional women, and career options in Non-Governmental Organizations and the State Department. We also had the chance to visit different official sites around D.C. like the Capitol and the Indian Embassy in order to see for ourselves how the organizations worked. I learned so much in just five short days about what it is like to work as a professional woman in the public policy world. This experience will be invaluable to my future, but the best part was meeting and interacting with the other girls from schools all over the country. It was wonderful meeting these inspiring, young change-makers and I am excited to see what the future brings for me and my new friends!
